Last year I planted a bleeding heart, which my dog successfully killed (or so I thought). I noticed that it has come back this year and is now about 2-1/2 feet tall! Now I am wondering, does a bleeding heart have to be cut back every fall, or will it continue to grow bigger each year, and become a large plant as I originally thought?

Your Dicenta (bleeding heart) is a herbaceos plant and may die off each summer. Bleeding hearts are not normally divided as other perennials are. But, alas, it should reappar next spring.
Let it die off naturally without cutting it back.
