I am building a deck in the rainy Pacific Northwest. The deck will be on the north side of my house which gets very little sun for 6 months of the year. I am trying to decide between 5/4 tight knot cedar or one of the new composite decking choices. My requirements for composite are solid not hollow boards and they must be light brown(cedar color). I have a complicated L shape deck and don't want to mess with hollow boards. My concern with cedar is that I may need to seal it every summer due to the shade and high moisture in my area.

Anyone have some advice on the best decking choice for my situation?

Composite decking material is gaining in popularity. Although low in maintenance, it still needs to be cleaned. Moss tends to be a problem in the Pacific NW no matter what type of material is used.

Mold/mildew can create some serious problems for wood decks. A shaded deck is particularly prone to such problems.
