Building a deck 10X17 26" h not attached to house. Have 6 - 4x4s. How do you determine the girder width?
Could I use a 2x8x16 or do I need a 2x10x16 ?

since the deck height is only 26" above grade.. i would strive to set your piers at a height so that you could eliminate the use of 4x4s and simply set your girders on adjustable post base anchors and nail them down. then set your joists on and with the finished material have a height around what you are looking for. Just an idea that could save alot of time leveling etc.

Thanks Josh, Unforunatly the city requires the 4x4's at 32" in ground
