I have to make a six inch hole in my foundation wall to run a flexible air supply duct. This is a solid wall (not hollow blocks). Someone suggested that i use a hammer drill and drill a series of holes, the bust out the circle. I began that process with my 3/8 hammer drill (not very heavy duty) and it took forever to get the bit halfway in. Is there a better method or a suggested tool that i might rent for this task?

Yes, go rent a core drill and 6" diamond core bit.
