Help!!
I've got a Toshiba 27" TV (12 yrs old) and the vertical linearity is messed up. The top of the screen is stretched out and the bottom compressed with a dark band at the bottom when the set is cold. After it is on for a while, the picture gets better. Is there an adjustment I can make of an amplifier or something which has to be replaced?
Thanks, Mark

bugsii, Whats the model number and date of manufacture on this television. That imformation is located on the back cover.
The techtip i'm looking at is for the 30" model, "1991", probably the same chassis just want to make sure.

Smokey suspects a leaking capacitor in and around the vertical oscillator is the problem here. The vertical sawtooth waveform is being deformed causing the anomaly.
Check this site for additional FAQ's on troubleshooting the problem:

Pay attention to Chapter 23-Deflection Problems
Once you determine your model number of the set, there's a good chance you can find a service manual here at Sams Photofacts:http://www.samswebsite.com/photofact/pf_search.asp
If not, Toshiba has a very helpful site located at:

For parts, check the Toshiba listings at:

bugsii, I'm going to assume you got that vertical linearity problem repaired, if not their are five electrolytic capacitors that affect the vertical circuit on this chassis when they go. C301(2.2uf) which comes off pin #36 of I.C.501 which controls vertical linearity becomes leaky. The other three are C308(220uf), C305(2.2uf), C306(1000uf), and C310(2200uf). C301 is the one thats most important in this case.

Thanks for your input, FreddyG. We concur on the capacitor replacement. Only you had a problem with the number! LOL!
Ain't it great to be a technician?
