I have dark paneling in my family room. I would like to lighten it but still show the wood grain. Is there any way of doing this?

Minwax (and others) makes a semi-transparent stain in a variety of astel shades - not just wood tones. Check it out.

I whitewashed the real wood, rough sawn panelling in my family room with watered down Kilz latex primer. It also worked well on the manufactured panelling we have.
