I have a 42 inch tv that when you first turn on takes a few minutes to get sound or picture. You first turn the TV, the power on lights come on, and you can hear the "power up" of the tv, but you get no sound or picture for a few minutes. After a few minutes, you will get sound, and the picture comes on, but the vertical size is about a quarter of what it should be. After another few minutes the picture enlarges and the tv works as it should. Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Good Morning, scotth3680:

I would love to help you here. My first question is: A 42" What?

How about giving me a make, model, and model year.

Oops - sorry about that - The TV is a Sylvania, and the Model on the front of the tv reads Superset II, and the model # on the sticket on the back is RRJ801 AK02. The manufacture date reads 9-88. I know it is an oldie, but it is a nice set! Thanks!

Thanks for the information. That tells me a lot.

Check the low voltage power supply for your answers to this problem. I suspect you have a couple of filter capacitors that have aged and are slow to charge. No uncommon for a set of this age.
Here's a site that will aid you in making those repairs with good information:

If you desire a service manual on the set, try here:

They don't show the RRJ version but suspect the RRH is the same chassis.

As for parts, most electronic supply houses carry filter capacitors that will fit this old unit. However, serious stuff can be found at

Look Under PHILLIPS SERVICE (Sylvania is now Phillips/Magnavox)
