just a quick question here. I have concrete precast stairs that lead out into the yard. They consist of one step (about 12 inches high x 4 ft wide), and the top section is about 4' x 4' x 2' high. I just need to install a railing with either balusters or lattice. The purpose is to protect my 18 month old son from crashing off the sides. I am thinking pt wood, but would consider other methods. Any ideas anyone can give me (with details) would be much appreciated.

Also,
concrete footings?
attach to stairs or stand alone?
attach to house?

thank you

Two ways to anchor whatever you decide to use for railing - dig post holes and sink end/corner posts or attach the main posts to the steps themselves. This would involve drilling holes in the sides of the precast unit with a good drill & masonry bit and installing masonry anchors. Also, if there is a lip that protrudes you will need to allow for spacer material so that the post will stand upright properly. Attaching this way will avoid any problems with movement of the railing associated with "heaving", the movement of the soil and things stuck in the soil from freeze and thaw cycles.

As for materials, visit your local home center (Home Depot, Lowe's) and see what they have available for use. In particular you might look at the various vinyl/pvc fencing materials.
