The kitchen currently has 12" vinyl tiles butted together. Does that flooring need to be removed before the ceramic tile is layed?

it is possilbe to lay ceramic tiles over vinyl but the vinyl has to be attached to the floor - if they are loose broken, forget. you also have to scuff the vinyl up to give the thinset something to attach to. That said, I would never recommend doing my tile job over vinyl, It is best to strip down to a solid subfloor and start fresh

Concrete underlayment board is recommended for ceramic tile. Any movement in a wood subfloor will tend to result in grout failure and possibly cracked tiles. Installing tile over vinyl should be avoided. Install at your own risk.
