As part of a second floor remodeling I am ripping out the ceiling of my 1955 cape second floor and insulating - it is extrememly hot up there in warm weather! I have had two quotes from insulation guys - one will use fiberglas bats - the other will use a combination of batts and blowin in cellulose where feasible. In all my research, folks who don't like fiberglas call it filterglas - because they think it allows air and moisture to go right through it. Those who don't like cellulose say it settles and you lose effectiveness over time. Help!

One of the advantages of loose fill insulation is that it can cover nooks and crannies and gaps that otherwise would not be covered when laying out batts of insulation.
Remember there is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to how much insulation you install. Find out how much insulation the Dept. of Energy recommends for homes in your area:
