i'm tearing out my old deck and putting in a new one. lowes is selling this "choicedek" , which is deck material that looks like wood but is rot and termite resistant. on their installation instructions they say to "make sure that your joists are level and spaced 16" on-center". this may sound ridiculous, but what is a joist and what does "on-center" mean.

The joists are the sructural members that the deck boards are nailed to. The 16" O.C. (on center) refers to the spacing of those joists. The distance between the joists taken from the center of the joist has to be 16". A lot of decks out there are built with the joists spaced 24" O.C.
