We have 10, 2x6s, notched to fit nicely into the 2x10 header. The notch is 1 1/2 inches and the joists seem to set solidly on the header. But, I think we need additional attachments. What hardware won't show too much? We do have windows close, and I hate the thought they'd get smashed because of inexperienced builders, [us]. thanks! Lily

congrats those notches can be trying to get a tight fit!.. ive built a similar roof arbor shade thing.. i screwed down through the notched 2x6 into the support rail.. they havent moved and we recently had some 70 mph winds. safe to say they are stuck permanent. or if you dont want any mechanical fasteners buy a bottle of gorilla glue. just dont get it on your hands --Hope this helps--Josh
