My home is at the end of the road in a valley area. At the top of the hill I have installed an arbor with a white picket fence on each side. I wanted steps to lead from the top of the hill with a walk way leading to the back deck.

I recently had some concret steps installed on the hill that measures 40' from top to bottom. When the contractor installed that steps instead of him putting in regular steps he installed 4 steps measuring 10' each in length. Unfortunately, because of the steepness of the hill when I tried to walk down the steps with regular shoes on my feet; I began to lose my footing and started to slide down the steps. It was a scary situation considering that I had nothing to grab on to. I know that I am going to have to install a railing but what can I do to make the steps safe that will enable a person to feel secure when walking down these 10' steps. It seems to need something that your feet can step on so that you won't feel like you're going to fall down the hill. I though about putting some kind of self-adhesive skid resistant pieces on the steps but I'm not sure that this will solve the problem. The contractor said that he installed the steps like this or he would have had to install about 50 or more steps because of the steepness of the hill. What can I do to remedy this serious problem. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

HELLO
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE STEPS ARE INSTALLED...
WHAT IS THE RISE AND RUN OF EACH STEP? ARE THEY LEVEL AND FLAT? ARE INSTALLED TO YOUR BUILDING CODE...IF NOT THE CONTRACTOR SHOULD MAKE SURE THEY ARE.......GOOD LUCK

HI!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS; EACH STEP IS TEN FEET IN LENGTH AND THE RISE ON EACH STEP IS THREE AND A HALF INCHES. THE STEPS REMINDS ME OF A SLIDING BOARD GOING STRAIGHT DOWN HILL THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THERE IS A THREE AND A HALF RISE AT THE END OF EACH STEP. I THOUGHT THAT THE CONTRACTOR WAS GOING TO DIG OUT THE HILL MORE AND INSERT THE STEPS SO THAT IT WOULD NOT FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO FALL DOWN THE HILL. ALSO, BECAUSE OF THE STEEPNESS OF THE HILL AND THE STEPS THAT WAS INSTALLED IF YOU HAVE ON A SMOOTH SURFACE SHOE AND DO NOT HAVE ON SHOES THAT HAVE A GOOD GRIP RUBBER SOLE YOU LOSE YOUR FOOTING AND WILL BEGIN TO SLID. I HAVE FOUND SOME SELF ADHESIVE SKID PROOF TREADS BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT YOUR FOOT COULD REST UPON BESIDES THE TREADS AS YOU WALK DOWN THE STEPS. ALSO, HOW FAR APART SHOULD I PLACE THE TREADS TO BE SAFE. YOUR REPLY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.

HELLO
YOU COULD ACID WASH THE CONCRETE AND REMOVE THE FINISH
THIS WOULD EXPOSE THE SAND AND GRAVEL..THIS WOULD HELP...
SAND BLASTING WOULD ALSO HELP ....iF YOU CHOOSE TO INSTALL
THE SKID PROOF TREADS....YOU WILL NEED THEM 12" TO 18" CENTER TO CENTER....BEFORE YOU INSTALL THEM....WALK UP AND WALK DOWN AND MEASURE... EACH WAY UP AND DOWN AND USE THE CLOSEST MEASURMENT THAT IS GOOD FOR YOU....LET ME KNOW HOW YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACID WASH WE NEED TO GO OVER THE SAFTY THINKS YOU WILL NEED TO DO...GOOD LUCK
