Our new deck was built for us, and the posts were placed directly on to the concrete footing, but without any sort of anchor. It was brought to my attention that for those of us living in tornado country, that the deck should be anchored to the ground (it is anchored to the house). Is there an easy way to retrofit anchors on to the posts, or in some other way anchor the deck to the ground? This is a large, irregularly shaped deck, approximately 26 inches from the ground, with no railings. The footings are constructed of concrete poured into holes. Thanks much.

are you sure the posts simple "set" on the poured footings? i have used J bolts as drift pins and you really cant see them once the deck is done. Now however i like to use a j bolt and an adjustable post base anchor. THe only easy way i can think of would be to get some metal strapping and nail it to the post and into the concrete pier. Mudsomething is what they are called when you put them in wet concrete ive never used them. If it would be possible to remove and shorten the post you could chip out enough concrete from the footing to set an anchor bolt using hydraulic cement. but thats an awful lot to do . I think pinning the post with the metal strapping and nails or even lag bolts in the concrete or post would provide an extra level of tornado protection. Hope this helps--Josh

Thanks for the tips. I'll check with the gentleman who built the deck for us and see if, indeed, he did anchor it in a way that isn't obvious now. I'll keep your other information in mind if the deck has not been anchored down.
