Hey I have the same problem as you do. I just got an antique that needs to have a little nick fixed and upholstery cleaning. I am perplexed about the reply you got! What I want to know, and what I thought YOU wanted to know also was just how to go about cleaning it up. What I read was something of a sermon regarding problems that may be caused by a former owner's lack of care for the couch (discoloration, depreciation, etc), which doesnt concern me at this time. I'm the NEW owner and like you need any possible advice on what methods to use to improve the appearance of an 1800's antique (dry cleaning, steam cleaning, etc.). Advice, anyone?

Hi Amanda!
See my reply to stevebro.
Also, it really does pay to have a professional clean your piece, if possible. I've tried doing
it myself with poor results. Being an upholsterer,
I guess I just can't get used to the idea of competing against myself!

Upholstery cleaning methods are determined by what type of fabric. Antique fabrics tend to be fragile and have unstable dyes, calling for a professional, preferably one who specializes in antique fabrics, Many curators and antique dealers, however, feel that the natural soiling and wear enhances the antiquity and adds to the value. Many older pieces have been reupholstered. Test any home remedy in an inconspicuous place first.
