pdf is right, i would not recommend you do this yourself, although it is not a complicated install, the complications come after the actual labor is completed. basically it is 3 wires ( if there is no sump heater), and 2 solder (braze) joints. sounds easy, but the system MUST be evacuated with a good vacuum pump for several hours, checked for leaks and recharged. with a diy install, no warranty on part, and as i have learned over the years, if you do not find out why the old compressor went bad and fix it the new one will go bad as well. dirty evap or condenser coils, bad wiring, etc will all kill a compressor. why not get the compressor, and let a qualified guy change it ? as a plumber surely you know some a/c guys, talk to them. good luck

Another thing is, if the compressor is not a perfect size for the system, the system will not be balanced, you will get low SEER, and after a while, the compressor will burn out.
Listen to hvac4u and PDF.
This is no Do-IT-Yourself job.
Anyway, you must have a refrigerant handling licence to charge the system yourself. You probably don't have the proper tools to do it yourself.
