I live in a condo and have a electric central a/c unit.last year i hadsomeonecome out and fill it andthetold me i had a slow leakin line.but managed to last mostof the summer.but i turnedon this year and the blower kicks on but theunit outsidedoes not.my friend told me he thought that it had a safetyswitch(that if not enough freon in system it would not come on due to it could damage the motor)is this true and so ifi have filled it should come on or should i expect to behaving some major work done?

low pressure switch, but if it is, be prepared for some major expense. leak detection, and repair can run up there depending on where the leak is. how old is the system, and what brand? you basically have 2 options, fix it and be done with the lack of reliability, efficiency and EXTREME wear and tear on your compressor due to low charge, or get somebody to gas it up. if he does with no attempt to locate the leak, you have found yourself a genuine freon pumper. the epa would love to meet him. do not rule out the possibility of an electrical problem, weedeater cut tstat wire to o/d unit, if condo, o/d unit might have been replaced but not indoor coil.............more info appreciated

thnx for fast reply...yes the outside unit has been replaced can tell by being diffrent to the ones around it..i had someone check for leak and they couldnt find it(granted he only looked for about ten minutes and i guees the main line is not very accesible and he said it would be really expensive to replace line or find leak).I checked wire connections(I consider myself to be semi mechanically inclined)and are ok i opened control box on outside unit to see if there was loose wire...rust on connecter etc.. which there was a little i cleaned up and still no juice. i dont no what this part was but looked like it was themain control switch(have no idea what u would call it) that moved looked like to make a connection (I thought would kick it on or suppose too).well when i moved the hinged piece or whatever i could here the juice trying to turn outside unit on(I think) but heard hum of power in os unit but it didnt kick on...sorry for all the babble best way i know to describe...I really dont know what kind of unit it is ..not very easy to get to inside part its mouhnted on ceiling in closet in bathroom above water heater...its electric so i am probably gonna sell condo ....money is tight right now due to loss of job so would like to get it up and running for the summer at worst considering dont have any spare money laying around right now thnx alot for your help i appreciate any input thnx

you are describing the contactor. if it is buzzing, it is recieving 24 volt signal from tstat. if possible, check to see if voltage(240) is going across the contacts, if so, and nothing running, you may have a dual capacitor gone bad. this would prevent both comp and fan from running
