Hi,

Have the standard 18" Satellite dish that the provider
recommends that it should be grounded.

Normal procedure is to attach a grounding wire to the dish and run that to a "grounding block" where the cable is attached as well and then run from the "grounding block" a ground wire to any house ground. So, cable from dish to "grounding block" then cable from "grounding block into house. Ground wire to "grounding block" and ground wire to house ground.

I 'd like to know if my dish is attached to a bathroom ventpipe which is attached to a cast iron sewer line, is that a house ground? If so, can I attach the grounding wire to the dish and then strap the grounding block to the vent pipe . Is this acceptable?

Thanks

By the way, the manuel just said when in doublt consult a qualified electrician.

Unfortunately that is not acceptable. There are a few ways to ground a satellite system.

#1. Ground the system to a cold water pipe using at least 8gauge ground wire.

#2 Ground the system to the house ground near the electrical panel using a ground clamp that goes arount the ground wire going into the the electrical panel.

#3 Slam a ground rod in the ground. They sell them in 4 foot sections and pretty easy to do. You need to check with the building code to do this. In some parts of the country a 4 foot ground rod will not ground a system.

I think grounding to a cold water pipe would be the easiest. How exactly is that done. ? Wrap around?

I have the grounding wire from the install kit.

Normally done with a large clamp. Comes in two sections that bolt together around the pipe and there is a big set screw for the grounding wire. Should have them in the elctrical section at your home center. The water pipe has to be metallic (galvanized, copper) and can't have any non-metallic breaks to interfere with the grounding.
