I need to make a small slab, say 4'X4' for a pump- where I want to put it is next to another slab that the AC sits on. Is there any problems just making the AC slab big enough to hold the pump? I guess the real question is where I would join the 2 slabs together, should I put some type of spacer there or just join them up? I was just wondering if they would crack being joined together.

Although your project is not a patio, the same principles apply.

"Install asphalt-impregnated expansion strips wherever the patio will abut a foundation, wall or other structure. Expansion joints accommodate expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes." 25 May 2002. http://www.berkshireeagle.com/pool/concrete.html
