We bought a 40 year old ranch home. One of the fireplaces is approximately 8' x 10, with a raised hearth. The problem is it is covered with "unpolished marble" slabs, laid similar to bedford stone. The darn thing literally sparkles. Needless to say, we want to remove the marble and replace with a stone or manufactured product of some sort.

Can anyone suggest where to start in the removal? I will have a pro do the replacement work but I figure I may be able to do the demolition myself.

Do I "chisel" it out? Cut? Can I use a pneumatic air hammer of sorts?

HELP!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Roger

All of the above. Wear safety goggles.
