Hi
I have a 100 year old house I am fixing up. The flooring in the laundry room is 1x6 dimension lumber nailed to the floor joists. On top of that is oak t&g flooring, not in good shape. On top of that is 1/4 underlayment topped with sheet vinyl. I want to take off the vinyl and underlayment and lay down wire mesh with the appropriate mortar so that I can install ceramic tile. Are there others things I might want to consider before I proceed? If I install the tile on top of vinyl, it will raise the floor to high for meeting at other rooms.
Thanks in advance for your response
James

you are correct that you shold take the vinyl out, not just for the height problem - it is just preferable. from the sounds of it you need to take the t&g flooring out also. use 3/4 inch ply, not sure 1x6 are big enough to hold you tiling job. check with an engineer

James:
I had a similar condition on a kitchen remodel earlier this year in my house. I ended up buying a gallon of a good quality wood glue and glued and screwed 5/8" plywood over the existing 1x6 subfloor. Worked great; solid as a rock. Don't skimp on the glue or screws; thicker plywood would be better if you can. Be sure to run the plywood perpendicular to the span of the joists and center plywood end joints over joists.
