I am taking up old ceramic tile and plan to put down new. The tiles are coming up relatively easy, but the quick set is a bear. Is there an alternative to trying to scrape all that off? It is a concrete slab floor.

need to get it as smooth and clean as possible. It is a pain but if you don't you could be doing it again when your new tile job fails do to poor adhesion. that said I have put down tile on "questionable subsurfaces - ie. leftover cutback adhesive etc- just get the best thin set in terms of bonding power, though you still run the risk of it not bonding but I have had decent success.

The original substrate material will determine your procedures. If installed on concrete, you can grind to smooth the substrate or apply self leveling compound to smooth the subfloor.
