Hi!

Thanks to our previous HVAC service contractor, we find ourselves in need of a new furnace. Our current system is oil, but we are considering switching to propane. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of either? Also one contractor that I got a quote from for an oil furnace told me to stay away from the high efficiency (+90%) oil furnaces. He said that they were too complicated and that no one was able to service them. Is there any truth to this or Is this just a company that doesn't want to spend the money on training it's employees?

Thanks,

Kate

Hi Kate, Yes the contrator is right, Don't get a 90% Oil, It's out there. but not very widely aviable. Just go with the Gas units. Oil is becoming a thing of the past, and Oil is involved with too much up keep. Like.... Oil Filter changing, Oil Nozzel change out. Heat Exchanger Cleaning. If you stay on top of that all the time then your system will stay clean. But if you don't do that, and don't give it a proper tune up, your system will become dirty with soots. So a dirty heat exchanger is like putting a blanket on it and more heat will be wasted up the flue. So go with gas. Gas runs alot cleaner as well, and quieter in a way. Also with gas. you will have more room in the basement from removing the oil tank! Good luck!
