I have vinyl tiles that I want to replace with ceramic. The underlayment is cement. My question is do I need to strip the old adhesive that's on the cement before I apply the thin-set that I'm using?

Installing tile or stone over existing vinyl/Tile is fine "unless". Vinyl is padded, peeling up or suffering from water damage or the ceramic tile is hollow or coming up. In these cases it is best to remove the vinyl/Tile. If your vinyl/Tile is down good then follow these simple steps.....Take a cinder block or brick and rough up the floor. Next clean the surface with fresh water. Rinse. Make sure you clean the floor as you go. Next, be sure to use a LATEX modified thinset. This is a must! Follow manufacturers directions for mixing and applying. This type of install will actually aid in eliminating the effects of small stress cracks in you slab.
