I am new to furniture re-finishing. I have received two end tables from my mother in law. She said they were purchased back in the 50s or 60s, and that they were made of cherry. There was a dark stain on the pieces, which I have stripped. My question is, how can I confirm if the wood is cherry? The shade of wood is moderate, and the weight seems pretty dense.

Another question, if the wood truly is cherry, is there a need to apply a new stain? I know that is an individual choice, but what do the experts think.

Look at the following webpage - it may help you to determine the species of wood your tables are made out of.

as far as staining? Yes, it is a preference thing. If you want a natural finish, you should clear coat it at the very least (varnish, or poly, or similar). This will darken the wood a little, so apply some in an inconspicuous area first, to see if it gets the appearance you desire.
