My kitchen ceiling has a hole in it where a plumber cut through to repair a pipe. It is also discolored and messy. I have been told that the easiest fix is to put new sheet rock over the old, rather than tearing the old ceiling down and replacing it. I have also had a recommendation that I use Ply-Bead instead of sheet rock, but that seems to be more for porches and informal rooms, not kitchens.
Any Advice?

I would rather install the drywall over the existing ceiling as long as it is fairly level and smooth, no big sags. Not familiar with ply-bead. I like the look of a finished sheetrock ceiling.

Ply-Bead is the commercial name for solid-wood paneling that looks sort of like wainscoting.
