I am going to paint the exterior of my house this summer. It is 70-yrs old with brick on the first floor and wood shingles on the 2nd floor. The wood shingles have lots of coats of paint on them.

I was told to use a power-washer to try to remove the loose paint. But I have to be careful not to get too much water behind the shingles (not sure how to do that, except to not dwell on one area too long).

So I was wondering if there is an acid wash of some sort that I could apply prior to the power-wash so that the power-wash goes fairly quickly. My only concern is that I don't want to stain or erode the fairly soft mortar on the first floor if it drips down. Any ideas?
