what do we use to paint over varnished cabinets that are l959 cabinets?

Lightly sand the surface, then wash with TSP (tri-sodiumphosphate), rinse and dry. Prime with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start, Insl-X Aqua Lock or Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 acrylic primer...leave 24 hours, then paint with quality latex paint.

Or...

Sand, TSP, then apply two thin coats of oil-based melamine paint with a high density foam roller (ie Whizz brand).
