In the process of removing some paneling in my kitchen, I have torn some of the paper from the sheetrock exposing the back layer of paper which is rough. I intend on painting the walls where the paneling was. Can I simply use joint compound to smooth over the rough surfaces, or do I need to use paper as well? Thanks. Bob
