We live in an older brick home that has been painted white. We would like to repaint the house with a flat paint, but are wondering what preparation is needed and what kind of paint will hold up?

Is the paint flat now? I assume it is, but need to ask. Test whether it was oil or latex that was originally used. Rub a spot with nail polish remover or methyl hydrate...if the paint comes off, it was latex (likely, but you never know with an 'inherited' paint job). If latex, as long as it's reasonably clean and dry, paint with a quality exterior latex such as Moore's 103-00, or 105-00.
