I have replaced some boards and added on to my deck. The problem is the original deck was painted with brick colored barn paint. I am wanting to paint the deck a beige color. Do I use opaque stain or do I need to paint with barn paint or what? Also I don't want to have to sand off all the old paint if possible. Suggestions?

A few questions for you Norm:
How do you know it was paint that was used?
What condition is it in now? Any failure?
I always recommend sanding a deck with 40 grit paper (it doesn't have to remove the old stain, simply encourage any ready-to-fail areas to be removed and give the new topcoat something to grip to) followed by a good deck wash and rinse and allowed to dry very very well before applying any product. Decks are the number one 'complaint' when site inspections become necessary, especially up here in Toronto. At any rate, the best transition product (from paint to stain) is an acrylic deck stain...buy a good one like Benjamin Moore. Two thin coats are best but one may just work.
