What is a good mix of drywall mud and water to use when doing the knock down texture for drywall?

I just mixed it untill it was like about like tooth paste, but maybe a bit thiner. Just parctice on a scrape dry wall before you do it. I had never done it and match two walls in my living room to the existing walls that were there( took down panneling in the room that had no texture behind it). Also make sure you get the lumps out. Save yourself some trouble and buy a mixer for you drill and make sure you drill meets the requirements from RPM. My drill was old and gave out on me during mixing. I ended up buying a new hammer drill that day.
