Painting - Paint to dark where do I go from here?

I have painted my living room walls a beautiful raspberry color to match my newly made couch covers. The problem is that it is to dark for the room and I do not know what to do. I have tried in a small area to rag it but the white paint I used for that does not seem to want to blend well. I want to keep the color as base color and do something over it. Can you use regular paint to sponge over a previous color? Any suggestions?
