A quality brush is worth the investment....many good makers: Purdy/Corona/Wooster...bristle for oils, polyester for latex. There are many types of varnishes and polyurethanes in both oil and latex...stop in to your local paint store and explain what you wish to do and they'll guide you. Minwax is one company that makes a full line of stains. Most good paint companies have their own glazes, either oil or latex.

I'm located in central fl. We have a huge flea market here thats open on the weekends. Theres also one in Daytona beach.
These are very good places to find old furnishings to practice your faux techniques. Also, 3 words... yardsales...yardsales ...yardsales. ;)
I've redone some things that i bought for $5 or $10 dollars
and resold them for up to $100. I found that I'm more willing to try new things if I didnt invest much in the first place!!
Good luck
