Painting - paint preparation

i am getting ready to paint my house and i have a friend that used to live in ca. He mentioned that he saw a painter use a product for preparing his windows. he said all he did was brush this stuff on then when he was done painting he used his scraper or a putty knife to scrape it off. does anyone know what this product is called or where i can get some...thank you for any help.

Trimex is one brand we sell here in Toronto. Paint the dividers, sash, etc...overlap onto the glass an inch or so, or, you cab prime the whole works if you like, then cut and peel it away after. Works great for French Doors and such. I don't know how easy it is to find in the States though, (you may need to call around your area) so I did a search and came up with this:
