Hello,

I've got some small to medium sized brownish colored mushrooms growing all over my lawn. I remember reading somehting about this problem awhile back, but i cannot remember if its a bad thing. Something tells me mushrooms growing in your yard is bad. I keep my lawn a nicely manicured 4" tall, i'm thinking it my be too tall therefore holding too much moisture. Any Insight on this problem would be appreciated.

thanks

Hello Rookie 2001

Mushrooms aren't really desireable, but they aren't the worst lawn problem you could have. Generally, they indicate that there is buried wood debris in the area - they 'feed' on the decaying wood. Could be old roots, building debris or fenceposts, etc...

Drying your lawn out might help a bit, but it won't eliminate the problem - unfortunately, until you remove the wood, they will continue to appear. Up side (if there is one) is they are generally only a nuisance - you can knock them down with a leaf rake or mow them over.

Good Luck

Howie
