We just bought a 1996 double wide mobile home. How can I tell if the wallpaper that is throughout is vinyl or not. We want to remove the strips and paint everything.

Its hard to explain since I have the expert touch now. If you plan on painting anway it doesn't really matter because the stripping technique is the same for either type. Generally, on vinyl wallpaper, the facing material (decorative layer) will pull off in bigger sheets from the backing material. Vinyl will also repel water, so wetting it will tell you as well. Also, some wallpapers will smell like plastic. True papers are actally rare and are either really old or generally very expensive. Wetting them will immediately cause a wet, darkened spot on the paper. True papers also tend to strip off in annoyingly small pieces as well. You can find additional wallpaper stripping and paint prep advice on my website listed below. Best of luck.

Is it really wallpaper? Some mobile homes are made with wall panels that are preprinted with the design. Even if its wallpaper on top, what is underneath?
