Yes I would like to know what type of tool to buy to make some birdhoue's. I have seen some plan's that you need to rip wood so I guess you would need a tablesaw. But I would like to buy a mitre saw for me I would use alot more and use it to cut angle's on house's. Does anyone know anywhere to get any good simple birdhouse plans or any suggestion's on what tool to buy? I can only buy one at a time. Thanks alot Steve

Hi,
If I were starting out, no tools at all, I would invest in a good circular saw and a nice straight edge, and 3 or 4 good saw horses.
If I had a good circular saw my next tool would be a good power drill, and a set of drill bits. If I had those tools my next major investment would be in a nice table saw. The miter saw is limited to (a 10") is limited to about 5-1/2" in its cut, so I would opt for a 10" sliding compound miter saw. Also you could look into a nice 12" or larger band saw. You can do a lot with a band saw. Look around, ask other woodworkers, about what tools they have and what they would do if they had to replace one.
In otherwords what don't they like about it.
Go to the library and get a book on table saws, band saws, and read a little about what they can do. When you buy, get a tool that feels good to you and you feel safe with, even if the price is a little higher. I opt for tools that have a good replacement parts department, (craftsman, delta, porter-cable, and other leading brands)
Hope this will help you some,
Trent

For building bird houses, a band saw is the way to go. You can do a lot with a band saw. You could buy a cheap circular saw and rip stuff down to a size you could easily work with on the band saw, but that makes 2 tools!

For what you're looking to do, and with wanting to choose just 1 tool, I can't see how you could beat a band saw for its flexibility.

Without a doubt, a tablesaw is the most versitile shop tool you can buy. There are unlimited jigs that you can make for it to do just about anything you want.
I make alot of birdhouse's and this is the first tool that gets used. Just make sure that if you buy one, don't buy a piece of junk, look for a good used saw if $ is a big factor, they are out there.......just remember, if you buy a piece of crap, you will own a piece of crap.
Good Luck.

The table saw would be my first tool if I were just starting. You can rip, crosscut, and cut all the angles you need without the limits of a mitr saw. Then you can make jigs and fixtures to expand other projects as your experiance and ability incresses.
