I have a door knob that, when turned to open the door, simply keeps turning and the door will not open. The hinge does not turn or move at all as well. Any hints or ideas on trying to fix this, or what the problem might be? Thanks.

Sounds like the shaft that runs thru the striker mechanism is broken......hard to say exactly.....the "hinge" is the part of the door on the pivot side, not the opening side....do you have the names confused ?? or are the hinges stuck also ??? If both sides of your door are torn up, I'd say somebody laid some superglue on you :)
Usually two screws on the inside you remove to take off the inside and outside knob....then you can see what is going on.
Sometimes the inside screws have a cover plate over them....you may have to remove the inside knob first to access the screws....look on the bottom side of the inside knob shaft for an indented area that will push into the shaft with a small screwdriver....that releases the knob as you pull back on it. Then look up under where the inside knob meets the door for a small indention in the cover...pop the cover off with the screwdriver and you can see the two screws holding a sub plate and the outside knob together. Remove or just loosen if they have a slot that you can turn the base slightly to free it and the outside knob at the same time.
Examine the shaft that goes thru....Broken ? Replace set.
Examine the striker mechanism....remove two screws on the door edge to take it out.....does it work freely....or if you stick the knob shaft back in the hole where is normally goes and turn, does the striker go in and out ? If not, replace set.
