I have 2 walls just inside the entry door which have the remains of the glue used for something like mirror tiles still there but painted over. Basically the previous owner removed the tiles and painted over the glue instead of removing it. It also looks like they might have tried to remove it and caused damage; used spackle to try and cover it up. SO..what I'd like to know is would I be better off to sand the wall and retexture OR maybe just use joint compound and build out (and mask the imperfections) the wall instead?

I think I would sand and retexture. If you try to build it out, it will most likely turn into a mess. Are you able to match the existing texture?

I'll probably try that first; seems like the easiest route to take. I hadn't tried anything yet; I would think a retexture would work though.
