Not sure this is the right place to post, but here's my problem. My husband and I just build a huge doghouse and even tho I asked him to square up the base, the house is not square. Also, a lot of other things were not taken into consideration. My husband wanted to get it built, and that day. I'm not blaming him, I was there during all of this and didn't open my mouth. We have insulated the silly thing and finished out the inside. The problem is that since it's not square, the walls are not flush, to each other on the outside. Can I take 1x4's and "trim" out the house, caulking beforehand, to seal these outside joints. The way it sits today I don't see how it can be waterproof, and don't want to shingle the roof until I know whether or not the trim idea will work.

The plan came from this site if you need to see what the house is supposed to look like.

We built it 4 x 8, and know that we've made some major errors, especially in the fact that the roof is the same dimensions as the house itself, hence not wanting to shingle until I know if the trim idea will work. We ended up nailing the roof down (no room for hinges/no overlapping of roof). Please tell me that we didn't just waste $150 in materials. Would rather put a little more into it, than toss what we have already built.

Shouldn't be a problem to put corner trim in the doghouse. Just make sure to assemble them first to get a nice square corner and then attach them to the doghouse. That way only you, your husband and your dogs will know the difference and I'm sure the dogs won't tell. As for the roof, what about putting another piece(s) of plywood on the roof that would overhang the walls and then use some gate hooks and eyes to hold the roof on the doghouse.

i like the gate hook/eyes deal. the purpose in being able to raise the roof (hinges) was so I could keep it cleaned out. its 4' tall in the front and slants to the back, so I can crawl through it even with the roof nailed down (talk about a pain and needing a drop light!). Thanks for the ideas and help with our "mess up".

Hi,
When you trim out the house, get a good silicone caulk and fill in tne gaps on the corners, and maybe a bead down the sides behind the trim so as to keep out a bug population.
Good luck,
