I'm going to install a new french (single swing) patio door this weekend into a rough opening of 72"x80" that will be created when I remove 2 windows in the sun room of my house. I've already removed the trim to the windows to check/measure the distance b/w the jack studs and floor/header. Everything looks ok so far. My house is older, w/cedar shingles on the exterior.
Any advice for a first timer to make this job go smoothly?
thx.

I hope the header goes across both windows and aren't two seperate headers. Otherwise will need to change it.
Good luck!

Yeah, that was the first thing that hit me too....
Assuming that is ok, I'd pull enough shingles from around the outside so you can set the new doors right to the sheathing, then re-install the shingles to the door......Probably ought to make sure you can get some replacements, because they're bad to split and break when you try to remove old ones.

Did you get the door in? I am going to do the same type job with one window to remove. I plan to take out the window 50x55 and install sliding glass doors 60x80. There is crawl space under the floor and a baseboard heater. Got any tips?

I got the door in no problems. It took about 10 hours, and the debris pile was bigger than I thought it would be. One thing I found that might help if you are installing a single swinging patio door (where one door is stationary): if you install the prehung door, and everything us square, but the door is sagging slightly, try a single shim in the bottom center under the threshold. An old-timer told me about this trick, and it made my door fit perfect afterwards.
as far as baseboards, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you have to remove baseboards to install your door?
good luck, pray for sun
