I've got a pattern berber throughout the main floor of my house. I've only had it for a year, and last month the cat somehow snagged a loop and pulled up a small section (maybe an inch and a half). I've heard that it's possible to repair the carpet by hot glue, time and patience. On the other hand, various carpet dealers recommended cutting out a section of carpet and putting in a new one. I'm a little nervous about the latter. Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Berber has looped pile running in parallel rows. Snags can be a problem with berber carpet. Snags should be snipped to prevent additional unraveling. It is recommended that carpet repairs be left to a professional. Because it is next to impossible to restore the unraveled loops, patching is recommended. This will require a skilled hand, using seaming tape and carpet glue and making sure the loops and rows in the patch match.

You can re-burl the yarn. If you still have it, and it hasn't
lost its twist. If it has you may stretch a wall in a
bedroom and get a yarn off the edge, to use for the
repair.
Using acrylic latex carpet seam sealer and some tools(Ice
pick, jewlers screwdriver, or an awl) Squirt latex down
into the backing(You may need to cut the TOP primary
backing) and start stitching. Don't get too carried away
with the latex, or you'll have it all over the face yarns.
Sticking the nub of latex that is already on the yarn down
into the new latex with your "tool", hold it with your other
finger and pull out. Then don't mess with it for a day.
Place a book over it with some weigth on it.
Now with all that said, if it is at a seam edge, you will
need to cut the seam open, take all the old seam tape
off, cut the bad row out and reseal with latex(which the
original installers probably didn't do. That's why your
having this problem) and reseam.
Good luck! It's an art.

Thanks for your detailed responses! I'm going to try and re-glue since it's such a small section. Thanks again.
