Moving into an older home (1950's) with an existing stone fireplace which extends into the room. Tile flooring around fireplace extends at least 3 ft in front and 3-4 ft. on sides. (There are "slices" in the stone sides of the fireplace which the previous owners told us were for ventilation and air intake. Now my question, I would like to retile the floor around the fireplace, but don't necessary want to have so much of it. What would be the minimum required distance from the fireplace (front and sides)...or is this a question I need to ask of my township?
Thanks in advance.

Premanufactured hearths are typically 20" deep and length is measured according to the width of the fireplace. If the stone fireplace already has a stone hearth, then there is no need for the tile. Previous owners may have installed the tile for additional protection from sparks and to have a surface that was easy to clean and maintain.
