hello
i too wish to remove a portion of a wall, about 8 feet of it.
i plan on bracing the ceiling on both sides with 2x's with a piece of plywood flat to the ceiling. the 2x's would be in a tent position and toenailed. after this i wouldremove this section with a sawzall.
IS THERE A WAY TO TELL IF IS WEIGHTBEARING BEFORE OR INTO THIS PROCESS? I WAS HOPING TO GET THRU THE PLASTER TO SEE WHAT WAS THERE.

LowTech: cut hole in ceiling or go up into your attic.
HighTech: You can rent a camera with a fiber optic lense.
Then just drill a hole in the ceiling a look to see if anything is sitting on top of the wall.
If you know the direction of the floor joist or roof trusses, and they go parallel to the wall you are removing, chances are it is not load bearing.
You can also look under the wall you are removing. If it is load bearing, there must be a wall/foudation to support the wall you are removing.

then the three ways are if the rafters run parrallel to the wall it may not be, if there is nothing on top, and if there is no support beneath it.
