I just had my red oak floors refinished. The contractor did a beautiful job applying a sealer and 3 coats of satin poly. Only problem is a spot about a foot square in the living room where the finish looks like it absorbed into the wood more than the rest. This is the same spot where the 2nd coat of finish was puddled a bit. My hunch is the screening of that coat removed too much finish there and let the 3rd coat penetrate too much. I hate to have everything rescreened and refinished. Can this spot be fixed or can just one room be redone without a noticeable patch?

Waiting to hear from the contractor.

Anyone considering refinishing their floors should do it. They look so great when done.

Yes it is possible to "spot" finish a certain area and have it blend. I have done numerous scratch and dent areas for people and you would'nt know that it was done...

Well the touch up looks better but still visible. What happened was the contractor left a puddle on the previous coat. When they came to do the final coat they removed the puddle a little too aggresively and that created the dull spot. They are offering to do a complete re-coat to make me happy. That would be 4 finish coats on top of the sealer. Is this too many coats considering the finish product is Hydroline (?) a water based finsih?

Just spoke with someone who told me they had 6 coats of finish applied. Many of the prefinished products have as many as 6 coats. The extra layers of finish provide greater protection of the wood.

I'm curious about the response regarding fixing scratches, etc. What was your approach? I just finished refinishing our wood floor in what will be the baby room and this morning noticed that a rather large house fly has gotten stuck and imbedded in the top coat last night as the floor dried. I'd rather not rescreen and refinish if possible. I'm using Minwax Satin oil polyurethane.

Thanks, John
