I just bought a 100 yr old house and I would like to remove the upstairs carpeting. There is lovely bird's eye maple underneath the carpeting, but the carpet is glued down. The glue is now black and brittle. What is the best way to remove it without damaging the floor?

many people have had success with scraping adhesives and also sanding works well. because the floor sounds like it needs to be refinished i would sand...

Forum posters report success using adhesive removers/strippers if adhesive has not penetrated the finish on the floor. Scrape gently along length of boards, avoiding damage to the wood. Once adhesive and residues have been removed, the floor can be sanded and refinished. Sanding adhesive may drive the adhesive into the wood.
