I have an older home (1973) with aluminum windows... I had a quote for replacement windows that floored me. So I was curious if someone here could tell me if it is reasonable.
2 windows 24 x 36
5 windows 72 x 36
rough qoute $5000
the windows at home depot are all under $100... what gives?

I'd do the job here in East Tennessee for about $1750 unless you have something REAL unusual. And if you can get the windows at HD for $100...you ain't getting much.....My cost on those 36x72 is about $190 with tax for a good Simington double hung.

tHE ADVANTAGE OF "REPLACEMENT WINDOWS" IS THat no work needs to be done on the interior of the house. You say you have aluminum windows. If removing them would entail getting into the interior trim, then you could get into a lot more labor cost. If they can be removed from the outside without messing with the interior trim then your bid sounds awfully high.

Got one that beats all. WE live in a cape cod house that is about 50 years old. We have 14 windows that need to be replaced. They are nothing special just your standard window. We have had several quotes around 6-8 thousand. We had one company that came in, gave us there speel and said she is going to work with us on the price. We sat down and she said "How does $20,000 sound?" Our jaws dropped. Me wife said"I'm sorry we wasted your time, you can leave". $20,000 can you believe that. What do you think would be a reasonable price for 14 windows??

Anything over $250 to $300 a window is a rip unless you have unusual circumstances or code requirements in your area. One fellow I was talking to on another forum was telling me they have "lead paint" requirements to deal with there and that runs their install costs up some, but barring that, your 14 windows should be in the $4000 range.
Window sales people are the "tin men" of today.....Tin men were aluminum siding sales people. Go to Blockbuster and rent the video of the same name with Danny Devito.....you'll recognize a LOT of the hucksterisms in the movie if you every had a few home improvement quotes :)

Well, as a matter of fact, I was in Oklahoma City last week.....wife had a meeting and I was the designated driver :)....sat around the hotel twiddling my thumbs for 4 days.....well, no, I did get out and drive around some.....MAN....Does THAT town need a bunch of replacement windows !!
Anyway, the way you find me here, and I'll assume somebody like me there, is either word of mouth or you call the aluminum wholesale place I buy my windows and ask for an installer....If you'll get somebody that ACTUALLY does the install, you'll probably get a better price than if one of those guys with the diamond pinky ring, the fake Rolex and the fancy car he's leasing rolls up :)

We just had five estimates from a bunch of folks including Lowes, several window sales outfits, an experienced general contractor, and a handyman. The LEAST expensive quote for 14 larger (around 100 united inches) double hungs replacements....$350 a window (the range was from $550 to $350) not including anything special or out of the ordinary.

What type window do you have now ?
What area of the country are you in ?
What are the spec of what you're wanting to go back with?
Who was the cheapest in price of the ones you've had out there?

I live in Cincinnati. Currently we have original (I think 1914) wood double hung windows with rope connected to the weights in the wall. The trim that surrounds our windows has visable screws so removal should be easier. The least expensive quote was from the general contractor, then Lowes, the handyman, followed up by Nu-Vue, then Champion. I have 10 approx 100 united inch openings, 2 smaller windows (bathroom and kitchen above the sink), and two very small picture windows flanking a fireplace...14 in total. The window brands were Champion, Nu-Vue, Reliabuilt, Simington, and one I can not remember. Some had gas others did not.

For a Simington "Reflections" window, which is mechanical frame( and that is BETTER than the welded frame in my opinion) and welded sash:
92-101 UI is $165.60
82-91 UI is $153
72-81 UI is $143.40
0-71 UI is $132.60
This is white, with half screen included. Tan about 10% more.
Add $20 per window for LowE, or colonial grid or obscure glass.
Full screen, add $10
Plus sales tax.
I also use a Dove brand window when price is a real issue, and they run about $25/window less than the above in each UI category.
Install labor for the type of windows you have shouldn't run over $75 per window ( I typically do them for $50) and should include wrapping the outside trim with PVC coated trim coil Anything above that is the overhead and profit the company is making......you decide HOW outrageous that is.
