I moved into a house with two fire places, one upstairs one downstairs. My question is there is three rods that come out of the front of the fireplace upstairs and one more rod down stairs. there is two knobs to open the flute as well, one up one down. what are the rods for??if you need more info to answer let me know.

The chimney may have open/close caps controlled by the rods and wires going up to the top of the chimney.
Have you looked up there?

Within the brick face area on your fireplace,do you see anything that looks like a metal grate or vent?Is your fireplace a metal insert? The top control dampers usually have a pull chain hanging down -
