I need to re texture the walls in our bathroom. How do I get started. The dry wall is still in great condition, but the previous owner pulled off old tile and put in a surround without any effort of cleaning up the mess around the shower. There are a lot of old nail holes that have just been painted over (and over and over).... I would like to install a new medicine cabinet and recess it in the wall.... As you can see I have lots of ides I just need to know how to get started... :confused:

If all that you have are nail holes and other minor defects, you can mud those with sheetrock compound and sand them smooth.
OR, you can skim coat (solid thin layer of sheetrock compound) the whole wall, if it is really bad.
Sand, prime and paint it.
To install a bathroom cabinet, those that are to recess into the wall will usually have a 14.5"-wide base that fits right between the wall studs. You just cut out the drywall where you want to insert it, and screw it to the studs.
If you want light beside it, you can pull new wiring to it while you have the wall open.
